IN MID-1800s England, mourning jewelry was Big Business for jewelers. Jewelry stores kept a stock of generic "IN MEMORY OF" jewels on hand for times when a death came suddenly or a family was on a budget and couldn't commission a bespoke jewel. This ring was probably in that category. The bereaved family could customize the piece by having the jeweler engrave the deceased's details inside. Hallmarks tell us the jewel was made in London in 1842, and poor HP died in August 1846.
