Excavated Necklace
$45.00
A 20" pink enameled chain has been strung with glass and porcelain beads that are estimated to be between 100-300 years old. They were produced en masse in Europe and were sent to Africa, where Dutch colonialists traded them with indigenous people in exchange for goods and services. The matte porcelain beads were recently excavated in Mali; some have traces of earth left in their cracked and pitted surfaces. The more translucent doughnut-shaped circles are handspun glass and some are ever-so-slightly tinted with red, purple and blue impurities. For contrast on this necklace we've added a 1970's-era copper bead that we've spray-painted white. Brass spring ring secures chain at back.
