1920s Lucky Chimney Sweep Necklace

$695

Sold!

IT MAY seem weird to Americans, but in 18th and 19th century Britain, chimney sweeps were a lucky symbol. They prevented disaster; keeping chimneys clear protected homes and cities from fire. So they were literally protectors of the household. If a bride spotted (and maybe kissed!?) a chimneysweep on her wedding day, she was guaranteed fertility and a prosperous home. Here's a happy one, enameled on 14k gold, carrying all the tools of the trade.

  • Age

    c. 1900
