We think this small agate oval intaglio represents Hermes (Mercury, to the Romans). The carving is stylized and simplified, but a few details provide clues. Hermes/Mercury is conventionally identified by his winged cap; a swooping line on the head *could* be a wing. We're more convinced by the staff he's holding, with two snakes twining together. It's called a caduceus, Mercury's most recognizable attribute. I appreciate the thought that the stone carver put into the intaglio's placement and cutting. The rock serving as a chair for the figure is engraved on top of a dark spot in the agate. We've mounted this ancient object in a new 14k gold frame.
