Carved nearly 2,000 years ago, this ancient Roman chalcedony intaglio depicts Jupiter, king of the gods. The bearded deity is holding his long scepter, a symbol of divine authority. Jupiter was the Roman equivalent of the Greek Zeus, associated with thunder, lightning, justice, and the protection of the Roman state. His image was a popular subject for engraved gems, which could serve as personal seals as well as protective talismans. We've framed the translucent chalcedony carving in 14k gold.
