Early 19th Century Rose Cut Diamond & Crystal Croix de Saint Lo

$3,400

Sold!

The croix de St. Lo is a regional style of French cross from Lower Normandy, popular during the Empire and Restoration periods. They were often made using a somewhat primitive molding technique called cuttlefish bone casting and always had a hinge partway down to create movement. Although they're now vanishingly rare, they were once commonly seen in silver set with rock crystal or paste. That's what we've got here, but SURPRISE! Flip the pendant around and you've got a totally different piece: rose cut diamonds galore. Traditionally, these crosses were passed down from mother to daughter. A relic of a lost era and a city devastated by Allied bombing during the Normandy invasion during WW2.
