For the freaks: a Charivari talisman, part of a traditional hunting amulet from the 19th century. These elaborate assemblages were believed to bring luck and signify a person's high status, wealth and hunting prowess. Here, rows of squirrel teeth are mounted in silver; wearing parts of swift, resourceful animals was thought to channel some of their qualities to the hunter. Other Charivari charms were made from claws, antlers, coins, and horns.
