Early 20th Century French Horse & Rider Sliding Locket

$1,250

Sold!

AN INVENTIVE JEWELRY designer had a big idea in the early 20th century - what if this locket allowed you to put a picture of yourself (or a loved one) inside, creating the illusion that you WERE the rider of the enameled horse? Hilarious! Groundbreaking! The piece is marked with French hallmarks as well as “VARIA BTE S.G.D.G.”—an abbreviation for Breveté Sans Garantie du Gouvernement (“patent without government guarantee”). This mark was used in France and Belgium until 1968 for registered patents that had not undergone prior examination, essentially placing the risk on the applicant rather than the government.
