Early Victorian Amethyst Triple Seal Fob

$2,250

Sold!

How much do you want to know about CYMRU / CYMRW? The dealer who sold me this triple-seal fob used to live in Wales, and she told me that not only is Cymru the Welsh name for Wales, but it's also a term for a Welsh nonbinary person(!!!). The word (pronounced "KUM-ree") is derived from an old Brythonic word meaning something like "compatriots" or "fellow countrymen," while the English name Wales comes from a Germanic root meaning "foreigners". Why the goat? Since at least 1775, the Royal Welsh military regiment has adopted a goat as a mascot. It is treated as a valued member of the battalion, holding a rank and receiving a salary. "All's Well" and "Respondez Vite" were essential messages to send along with the inner details of your letter.
