Early Victorian Coiled Snake & Banded Agate Locket

$2,400

Sold!

Smile! Mid-19th century snakes in jewelry always inexplicably look so cheerful. This friendly guy is wrapped protectively around a cabochon of banded agate. As far back as Ancient Rome, this layered stone was the choice material for giving dimensional life to carved cameos, but in the Victorian era it was adopted as a hypnotically pretty material on its own. A glass locket hides on the reverse.
