Early Victorian Floral Cluster Sewn Pearl Earrings

$2,000

Sold!

In 19th century England, tiny seed pearls perfectly suited the Neoclassical taste for intricacy and restraint. Large natural pearls were so rare that most people would never see one, let alone own one. Seed pearls were way more available: they could be harvested in large quantities from freshwater mussels in Europe and America, making pearl jewelry more accessible while retaining its associations with refinement and virtue. Victorians loved jewelry that required time. In jewelry like this, tiny seed pearls were sewn on one by one, often using a single strand of horse hair or - brace yourself - catgut (which actually derives from sheep or cattle and not cates). These earring employ a maximal floral motif with seed pearls sewn to a mother of pearl disc.
