Early Victorian The Pelican in Her Piety Wax Seal Necklace

$1,650

Sold!

The allegory of the “Pelican in her Piety” originated in the middle ages. The legend of a mother pelican piercing her own breast to feed her young and thereby sacrificing herself to save was employed as a symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus. Interestingly, this myth arose from a misunderstanding of a pelican’s behavior—such as resting its beak on its chest or transferring food from its pouch—which was mistaken for self-wounding. Nonetheless, the vulning pelican represents charity and selflessness and she is seen her in this wax seal beneath the words “My Delight.”
