Georgian Amethyst Monkey Ring

$3,800

Sold!

DURING THE Georgian era, carved gem rings featuring animals—particularly monkeys—were a weird THING. Most commonly carved from labradorite, their freaky little faces reflected both a fascination with the exotic (fueled by global trade and travel) and the Enlightenment-era interest in natural history. Monkeys were often seen as clever, mischievous mirrors of human behavior, making them a witty, slightly subversive motif for jewelry. This unusual example is carved instead from amethyst, with tiny rose-cut diamond eyes set in silver.
