Black gemstones, whether jet, glass or onyx, always indicated mourning in the Georgian era. Here, the symbol of a padlock - a permanent connection, a locking of one's heart to another - adds another layer of meaning. Hair and the monogram "PRS", cut from gold sheet, are protected under domed glass.
