Georgian Grand Tour Cameo Bracelet

$2,800

Sold!

A Grand Tour souvenir bracelet in 9ct gold, set with natural stones like jasper, basalt, and figured agate. Each cameo is carved with a classical figure: Apollo strums his lyre, Medusa wears wings and a coiled snake in her hair, Diana bears her crescent moon, Hera rules with regal calm, and Flora is crowned in a garland of leaves. During the 19th century, wealthy travelers roamed Europe in search of culture, and nowhere loomed larger than ancient Rome and Greece. Neoclassicism was the aesthetic language of the educated elite; owning miniature versions of classical gods and myths was like wearing your knowledge on your sleeve. This bracelet was proof that you'd done "the Tour" and studied the ancient sites.
