Georgian “Here are cherished...” Urn Mourning Ring

$3,200

Sold!

Within white enamel, gold letters read "Here are cherished thy dear remains". Somewhere, a similar-looking urn may have contained a loved one's ashes. But in this ring, the "remains" are HAIR. The jeweler pasted and formed it into the shape of an urn, then decorated it with little pearls and bits of gold. In the year 1800, popular portrait photography wasn't a thing yet, so the only ways to preserve the memory of a loved one were to get a portrait painted (expensive!) or retain a bit of their hair to incorporate into jewelry.
