Georgian Memento Mori Symbols Mourning Ring

$7,500

Sold!

Dated 9 June 1740, this extraordinary 18k gold ring is one of the most elaborate memento mori pieces we’ve seen. While most mourning rings of the period include just a name, date, and a simple “IN MEMORY OF,” this one explodes with Rococo symbolism. The ribbon-shaped gold elements are enameled in black and adorned with finely rendered motifs: a skull and crossbones, gravedigger’s tools, a tempus fugit hourglass, a coffin, and a mysterious almond shape topped with what may be floral sprays—or a stylized grave. The maker’s mark reads “ST,” though we haven’t yet identified the goldsmith. (If you know, please tell us!) This is a bold, baroque reminder that death was once a constant companion.
