Georgian “Mia piu cara amica” Turquoise Half Hoop

$875

Sold!

DURING THE GEORGIAN period (1714-1830), Italy was considered the cultural heart of Europe. Wealthy British and European travelers felt it to be an unmissable stop on the Grand Tour, and Italian was the "romantic" language of choice for engravings on jewelry. Here, the inscription "Mia piu cara amica" ("My dearest friend") appears inside a half-hoop ring set with turquoise. This blue stone was famous for representing loyal friendship. The feminine form of the words are used, so we imagine this ring was given from one affectionate female friend to another.
