Georgian “Paix a'mon ami” Wax Seal Necklace

$750

Sold!

This Georgian wax seal fob is set with a white glass intaglio engraved in French: Paix à mon ami (“Peace to my friend”). Why is French on an English jewel? French was the international language of refinement and diplomacy in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Aristocrats, travelers, and letter-writers across Europe often favored it for seals, mottos, and sentimental tokens. The seal itself is gold-cased base metal (a thin layer of gold over a stronger core), fitted with white tassie glass. Around 1800, a fob like this would have hung from a watch chain, ready to impress its message of friendship and goodwill into hot wax.
