Georgian Pineapple Style Lava Earrings

$1,500

Sold!

In the late Georgian period, the pineapple was symbol of hospitality and worldliness. It was an imported luxury, difficult to cultivate and costly to obtain. Pineapple motifs appeared in architecture, silver, ceramics, and jewelry as a declaration of taste and access to global trade networks. Here, the abstracted fruits are rendered in "lava", a material which carries its own layered meaning. Volcanic stone, most often sourced from Italy, was prized in the early 19th century for its association with the Grand Tour and with antiquity. Lightweight, lava allowed jewelers to create intricate, wearable forms, while its origin in fire and earth lent it an elemental, almost talismanic quality.
