Georgian Sapphire & Seed Pearl Miniature Heart Locket

$1,750

Sold!

THE CLEFTED heart icon as we know if was born in the Middle Ages. It went through a few iterations between then and now; in the earliest years of the 1800s - when this locket was made - people would have recognized this upside-down tear shape as a heart. It's actually a closer approximation of what the human heart looks like, and it definitely would have been a powerful symbol of love. This locket opens in the back, and was made to stash a lock of hair from a lover. It's empty now.
