Georgian Tassie Lovebirds Wax Seal Necklace

$700

Sold!

A Georgian wax seal fob, set with a glass intaglio gem known as a “tassie,” depicts a pair of perched birds in close embrace. Today we’d call them lovebirds, a word that first appeared in English in the late 1500s to describe both the affectionate parrots native to Africa and, by extension, any devoted human couple. By the early 19th century, when this fob was made, the term was firmly embedded in sentimental imagery and language, making it a fitting motif for a personal seal. Pressed into hot wax, the birds carried a message of attachment and fidelity.
