Georgian Tricolor Gold & Turquoise Shell Fob Necklace

$850

Sold!

Scallop shells have long symbolized travel and pilgrimage - especially spiritual journeys. They are most famously linked with the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James), a medieval pilgrimage route ending in Spain. Pilgrims traveling there would wear or carry a scallop shell as proof of their journey. The shell's radiating grooves meet at a single point, representing many paths leading to one destination - a fitting metaphor for pilgrimage itself. During the Renaissance and into the Georgian period, scallop shells also came to represent safe travel and divine protection on the road.
