Late 19th Century Dutch Ship & Crescent Moons Nicolo Onyx Signet Ring

$2,600

Sold!

THIS RING features a classic Dutch heraldic composition cut into nicolo. We see a high-sided, three masted sailing vessel with square sails, the type northern Europeans used for trade and war from the 16th-18th centuries. In Dutch signets, this ship commonly signals a maritime livelihood or merchant success. In the late 19th century, it became romantic shorthand for the Golden Age of Dutch trade. The three crescents could mean many things, but they often are associated with hope and growth. One floats in the water, which feels kind of magical.
