Late Victorian Diamond Eyed Owl Necklace

$1,250

Sold!

THE OWL HAS been associated with wisdom since ancient Greece, where it served as the emblem of Athena, goddess of foresight and knowledge. In ancient Egypt, it was used as a symbol connected to death and the passage between worlds. In medieval Europe, the nocturnal habits of the owl led to its association with superstition and witchcraft. But by the late nineteenth century, the Victorian obsession with ornithology restored the owl as a benign creature of mystery. Our wise owl has two old European cut diamond eyes set into a symmetrical gold face.
