Late Victorian Turquoise Pomander Necklace

$2,150

Sold!

A perforated orb is studded with turquoise cabochons, like the head of a very chic mace. It looks a lot like earlier pomanders, popular in the Renaissance for holding medicinal perfumes and oils. In later centuries, vinaigrettes did a similar job - keeping malodorous air away from upper-class noses. By 1900, though, when this piece was made and patented (in Birmingham, as the hallmarks tell us), I don't know exactly what someone would have put inside. Patent medicine, maybe? In the 21st century, you can keep your emergency klonopin close at hand.
