Silver Gilt. (Layer of gold over silver.) This laurel-wreath-wearing dude is carved in profile (and in toga!) out of red "lava", which wasn't necessarily actual lava, but sounded way better than limestone or whatever other soft, carvable stone the Italians were using. Boccaccio was an Italian writer, poet, correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist. Lived in the 14th c., wrote the Decameron. Everywhere I see an image of him, he's wearing this kind of leaf-crown. 1 3/8" wide, 1 1/8" tall. squared-off edges, slim frame. Neoclassical vibes, also throwback to the Georgian era. It could have been made 1830-1890
