Mid 19th Century Charter Oak Ring

$850

Sold!

THE CHARTER OAK was an enormous, ancient tree in Hartford, Connecticut. Supposedly, in 1687, when the English crown tried to revoke Connecticut's colonial charter, local patriots hid the document inside the hollow of this tree to prevent its confiscation. The tree became a symbol of Yankee grit, defiance, and independence. When the immense white oak tree was finally blown down in a lightning storm in 1856, it was mourned as a national hero. Hartford held a public funeral. Craftspeople salvaged its wood to create keepsakes: gavels, chairs and jewelry. The relics were usually decorated with oak leaves, a symbol of strength and endurance. This ring is one of those rare surviving artifacts.

Were the events from 200 years earlier exaggerated? Absolutely. Did they even happen? Who knows! But Americans love a heroic tale - and a political souvenir.
