Mid 19th Century Eros & Angel Locket

$3,500

Sold!

This locket is *artistically* engraved with a scene of baby Eros holding his torch, the classical symbol of passion and the light of love. Beside him, an angel scatters flower petals, a motif traditionally associated with beauty and fleeting earthly joy. Together, they are an allegory of love. On the reverse, an anchor appears - the symbol of hope. I absolutely love when we find a locket lens made of mica instead of glass. Mica was widely used in 19th-century America as a practical substitute material, and its presence here suggests this lyrical, highly individual piece may have been made by an American hand using what was readily available. The engraving is so stylized it feels almost tattoo-like.
