Mid 19th Century Garnet & Diamond Heart Locket

$1,950

Sold!

By the 18th century, the heart had become the established symbol of love, appearing in countless variations: witches' hearts, blazing hearts, twin hearts, and hearts pierced by arrows. This jewel relects a form that was especially popular in the mid-19th century: an upside-down teardrop shape that more closely resembles the human heart than our modern heart symbol. Made around 1850, it dates to a period when both clefted and unclefted heart motifs appeared in jewelry. The glossy blood-red garnet gives it an especially visceral quality, while the rose-cut diamond ornamentation recalls the crowns, wreaths, and floral embellishments often found on Victorian heart jewelry.
