Mid 19th Century Micromosaic Swan Ring

$4,300

Sold!

In Ancient Rome, swans were associated with Venus, goddess of love. They sometimes pulled her chariot - how sweet! The Victorians saw the swan as a romantic symbol, too. Swans mate for life, and so became shorthand for fidelity and lasting partnership. Here, set in an 18k gold mount with distinct Etruscan Revival detailing, glass tesserae form a scene of a swan settling onto water. Micromosaics, produced in Rome in the 18th and 19th centuries, were created from slender rods of colored glass (tesserae) sliced into teeny sections and set to form painterly images. The technique draws on ancient Roman floor mosaics and, by the mid-19th century, had become a hallmark of Neoclassical taste and Grand Tour souvenirs.
