Scottish Victorian Malachite Bracelet

$1,800

Sold!

The malachite is doing almost all the decorative work here. The copper-rich mineral has been shaped into chunky octagonal cylinders, so every plane shows off the naturally striped and spotted patterning that was developed over eons underground. It's almost topographical, with intense dappled greens and patterning that becomes hypnotic when you look at it for a long time. The Victorians loved it too - they had a particular appetite for jewelry that showed off the strange beauty of the natural world. It was geology as ornament; only minimally decorated gold caps hold the whole thing together. I suspect the bracelet was once finished with a matching padlock-style clasp.
