Victorian “A pledge of love” Ivy & Diamond Ring

$1,675

Sold!

In 1891, an oath was made, secretly. "A pledge of love" was engraved inside this ring so that the wearer alone could feel the passion and promise of the words against their finger. It's a continuation of the tradition of posey rings, where an inscribed vow was believed to be amplified by skin contact. On the outside, ivy leaves drive home an affectionate message: in the language of Victorian floriography, these were known to mean "I cling to thee".
