Victorian Carved Jet Shell Brooch

$325

Sold!

Whitby, a seaside town on England’s northeast coast, was famous in the Victorian era both for its dramatic cliffs and for the glossy black jet mined nearby. Tourists flocked to the shore, collecting shells and buying locally carved jet jewelry to take home. This scallop-shaped brooch, carved of Whitby jet, might have been one of those souvenirs.
