Victorian Coral Fly & Branch Necklace

$1,100

Sold!

In Ancient Rome, a branch of coral worn around the neck was believed to shield the wearer from harm. Similarly, the Ancient Greeks thought that coral could reverse the ill effects of poisoning and evil spells. In the Victorian period, with the popularity of all things Classical, organic coral jewelry came back into style.

Here, perched on a coral branch, is a common housefly - they symbolized secret-keeping and the ephemeral nature of life. This pendant was likely made by an Italian stonecarver who specialized in coral harvested from the nearby Mediterranean. British Grand Tourists went nuts for it.
