Victorian Coral, Shell & Hardstone Cameo Ring

BY THE LATE 19th century, Neoclassicism had shifted from its earlier obsession with pinpointing gods and heroes to a more aesthetic, generalized take on antiquity. This ring—c. 1880—features carved cameos in coral, shell, and onyx, but instead of clearly identifiable deities like Apollo or Diana, we see idealized classical faces. Why the vagueness? Part of it was fashion fatigue—by 1880, classical motifs had been circulating for decades. The goal was no longer to show off your knowledge of mythology but to signal taste, refinement, and a connection to the distant past in a broader, less literal way. The industrial revolution had also changed everything: mass production made classical designs more accessible, and not every buyer cared to know who was on their ring. These cameos were about style, not scholarship: Neoclassicism for a new, expanding middle class.
