Victorian Dove of Peace Pietra Dura Brooch

$1,250

Sold!

Housed in its original leather box, faintly stamped Torrini Firenze (founded in 1369, among the oldest jewelry houses in the world), this piece shows us Florence’s long pietra dura tradition. Often sold as “Souvenirs of Firenze,” pietra dura (developed in 16th-century Florence) uses precisely cut hardstones—agate, jasper, and others—fitted together like a jigsaw to create colored images. In Roman mythology, doves were sacred to Venus, symbolizing love and fertility. The olive branch was widely recognized in both Greek and Roman culture as an emblem of peace. The familiar dove-and-olive-branch motif evolved over centuries, blending classical symbolism with early Christian imagery drawn from the story of Noah’s Ark, where the dove returns bearing an olive branch as a sign of renewal and divine favor.
