Victorian Engine-Turned “EM” Vinaigrette Necklace

$1,750

Sold!

This Victorian vinaigrette is engraved “EM” on its engine-turned exterior and dated 1876 inside. Vinaigrettes were small scent containers designed to hold a piece of sponge or fabric soaked in perfume, aromatic vinegar, or smelling salts. The pierced grille allowed the fragrance to escape while keeping the scented material safely enclosed. They were carried to revive the wearer or counteract unpleasant smells. The large suspension ring suggests this piece was intended to be easily accessible, originally worn from a chatelaine or chain. The inscription “E.M.M. 1876” means it was most likely a gift commemorating a birthday, wedding, or other significant event, but if you know and love an Emma / Emily....
