Victorian Gold Mounted Beetle Pendant

$875

Sold!

By the late 19th century, archaeological discoveries—sarcophagi, mummies, hieroglyphics—were making headlines across Europe, and Egyptian motifs flooded Western art, fashion, and architecture. And jewelry. This piece draws on the long tradition of carved scarab beetles, ancient symbols of rebirth and renewal, though these examples would have been entirely unfamiliar to ancient Egyptians themselves. The iridescent green beetles used in Victorian jewelry like this were imported from South America. (If you’ve ever seen a true scarab beetle, you’ll know they’re far less cute.) The insect's underside is visible, but it doesn't actually touch your skin - the mounting is built with a little buffer underneath.
