Victorian “How Sweet is Liberty” Falcon Wax Seal

$1,200

Sold!

This mid-Victorian wax seal fob is topped with a falcon’s head, worked in gilt silver with small sapphire eyes. The base holds an engraved smoky quartz seal that reads “How Sweet is Liberty,” surrounding an image of a bird escaping its cage. This sort of imagery was popular in the nineteenth century, when mottoes and miniature scenes were used to express personal ideals. Freedom from constraint, self-determination, and the hope of release were all common themes. Falcons themselves carried their own symbolism. They represented sharp vision, disciplined strength, and the ability to rise above danger.
