Pietra dura, meaning “hard rock,” is a method of inlaying stone developed in Ancient Rome. The pietra dura technique was used from early Roman times through the Renaissance to make decorative floors, table tops, and other mid-size architectural elements. The craft experienced a revival in the form of jewelry in the mid-nineteenth century when this piece was made. The flower in this c.1860 locket composed of many pieces of stone seamlessly fitted together and mounted in silver.
