Victorian Silver-Capped Talon Vessel Necklace

This hollow talon fitted in silver with a hinged lid dates to the later 19th century. Pieces such as this are known as “charivari” - a kind of animal charm worn on a chain attached to a hunter’s belt. These talismans were made from teeth, talons, antlers, etc, and were believed to bring luck on the hunt, protect the wearer from harm, and imbue the hunter with the traits of the animal.
