Victorian “Tho Lost to Sight...” Snake Seal Necklace

$1,200

Sold!

"Tho' Lost To Sight, To Memory Dear" was a phrase from an early 19th century memorial verse and was widely used in jewelry and seals. It acknowledges death, but reassures that the emotional bond is forever present. The unbroken body of the ouroboros, which makes up the fob, further comforts the wearer: nothing is ever truly severed. The circular snake symbol was understood in the 19th century to mean recurrence and time without end. Death isn't final; the connection is eternal.
